Description
English Heritage's survey of Stowe undertaken in 2001 notes several small hollows to the N of Wolfe's Obelisk. Each is roughly circular, 2m diameter and 0.4m deep, and interpreted as tree holes. On the 1843 estate map, there are 8 clumps of trees representing Wolfe's regiments at Heights of Abraham Victory in Quebec in 1759 (Bridgeman's 1739 estate map show much larger rectangular clumps). Few trees (three?) remain in situ today, however a comparision with the 1880 OS map shows that these are the trees from the 'regimental' planting. The two tree holes also correspond to the map information. On the 1880 OS map, only 6 of the clumps remain as the 2 most northerly have been removed to make way for a field boundary. (1).
