Description

English Heritage's Survey of Stowe undertaken in 2001 notes the remains of several tree stumps in this vicinity attributed to the Bycell Ride, shown on Bridgeman's plan of 1739 and the 1843 estate plan. One very large stump is surrounded by a degraded mound 12m diameter which is thought to be more likely the result of ploughing than an artificial tree mound. The two tree stumps north of the Bycell Riding are not marked on the 1739 or 1834 plans, but are shown on the 1880 OS map. The stumps are noted as having been recently damaged during ploughing (20).
