Monument record 0685100000 - SE side of Wing Airfield

An extensive area of magnetic anomalies relating to underlying archaeological features were detected during initial scanning along the proposed route of a new water main (Area 17). Subsequent detailed magnetometer survey of a 180m X 90m area and two further 90m X 30m areas immediately to the east (Areas A-C) identified at least 8 or 9 ring ditches, ranging from 8m to 15m in diameter, an oval ditched enclosure 18m X 25m, other enclosure ditches and possible pits. Interpreted as possible later prehistoric (Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age) settlement remains. 2 worked flints and a single sherd of Romano-British pottery were noted during the geophysical survey (B1).
The pipeline was subsequently re-routed to avoid the densest area of anomalies (B2).
