Description
Watching brief carried out in April 2002 during tree planting recorded quantities of Roman pottery, tile and building materials over a large area to the east and north of the Conduit House. The most significant find was an in-situ dump of Roman tile in tree pit 695. Geophysical survey of a large area in the vicinity of the tree pit identified a linear anomaly (possibly a kiln or furnace) 18m in length. Subsequent excavation revealed a substantial Roman structure with tile footings surviving up to seven courses of un-mortared tile. Two further trenches to the south revealed additional Roman brick and stonework in-situ. Previous finds of Roman pottery and building materials to the north and west of the Conduit House had been made by National Trust archaeologists in 1999 (B1).
