Description

Aerial photograph taken in 1990 shows area of ridge and furrow to the SW of the Gothic Temple, and other low-lying linear features around the temple which could be interpreted as former field boundaries (1).
The National Trust Survey of Stowe undertaken in 1989 noted earthworks in the south east corner and also field boundaries in the centre and on the west side of Hawkwell Field. The ridge and furrow may have been in use until the 16th century when land tended to be enclosed for sheep runs. This area was not incorporated ino the garden until the 19th century. Other features in this area include lynchets or linear depressions proabably field boundaries (2)
