Description
24 pottery sherds dominated by early modern and Romano-British wares. The Romano-British finds were spread out and are likely to represent cultivation rather than occupation. The lack of medieval pottery would suggest the field was outside the area cultivated in the medieval times. However on aerial photographs the furlongs of the medieval field system can be seen extending to the boundary of the modern field. It is possible that the furlongs were set up on the creation of Stockholt Manor after 1250 AD. The scarcity of pottery perhaps also suggests that the parish of Akeley was less populous than its neighbouring Leckhampstead, and that this field perhaps only ever served the small population of the Manor of Stockholt.
