Description

English Heritage's Earthwork Survey Report of November 2000 identified a large mound measuring 30.5m x 20.3m by 1.0m high some 60m north of the entrance and which tailed away to the south. It is possibly a natural feature or perhaps the remains of a midden noted in similar associations with entrances at Uffington and Danebury. The mound may also form part of the outer defences constraining the trackways approaching the entrance. There is a well-defined small circular platform measuring 1.7m in diameter with a large apron-shaped earthwork on the downward slope. This possibly represents World War II activity. Two parallel ditches, on average 2.8m wide by 0.4m deep, run up hill in a SE direction terminating at the possible midden perhaps marking the line of trackway 1 (B17).
