Description
Grade II. Small country house in park. Early C18 and later, but incorporating fabric of earlier house in which Oliver Cromwell's wife and daughters are said to have stayed c.1630. Painted stucco, slate roof with parapets. Central block 3-storeys with late C18 single-storey wings, the left-hand one raised and extended early C19. Full height canted bays either side of centre which has half glazed door with gothic glazing bars under dentil cornice. First and second floor bands, dentil cornice. Double hung sash windows, moulded string at head level. Right-hand wing has dentil cornice, two sash windows with architraves. Canted bay window to right hand return elevation. Two storey rear wing of similar design. Left hand wing matched that on right but has later upper storey; projecting porch on left has round arched entrance, cornice and wooden bell cupola with ogee lead cap and bell dated 1830. Two storey wing on left.
Interior: Dining Room: Bolection moulded panelling, wood cornice, fireplace and overmantel. Drawing Room: Adam style chimneypiece, moulded cornice. Lounge: plaster modillion cornice. Early C19 staircase. First floor 'Cromwell Room': bolection moulded panelling, original fireplace and overmantel. Room opposite has C18 carved wood fireplace with oakleaf pulvinated frieze.
