  • TRACKWAY? (Post-Medieval - 1540 AD? to 1798 AD?)

Description

2 ditches (features 300 and 303) identified as Iron Age in date were recorded during evaluation in trench 3. One of the ditches, 0.8m wide and 0.6m deep, was flat bottomed with vertical sides, the other 0.75m wide and 0.45m deep, was v-shaped. The fills each contained a single sherd of late Iron Age pottery and differed markedly from the fills of post-medieval features on the site. A rutted trackway with a central raised mound was also tentatively suggested to be Iron Age, but subsequent excavation of the adjacent area indicated that this is more likely to be post-medieval in date. The Iron Age ditches were not visible continuing into the excavated area beyond the trial trench, and it is possible that the pottery sherds were residual finds (B1-2). NGR to trench 3.
