Description

Probable World War II military camp shown on 1946, 1963 and 1964 APs. Shown on 1955-62 6-inch OS map, shown marked as 'Camp Site (disused)' on 1983 1:10,000 OS map (B1).
Presumably associated with Tingewick Airfield, though not shown as a technical or domestic area on the 1945 MoD plan of Tingewick Airfield (B2).
Army Camp. Camp entrance was on the A421 between Tingewick and Buckingham on the Buckingham Golf course. Used as a training camp. The main gate is now the entrance to Grovehill Farm. The site was returned to the golf club after the war and was run by a Mr Hickie. In the early 1960s the camp was used by a film company to film certain scenes in the film 'The Fast Lady' starring Leslie Phillips, James Robertson Justice and Julie Christie with a lovely racing green early 1930s Bentley (B3).

A Second World War military (army) camp is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located adjacent Grovehill Farm and in the grounds of Buckingham Golf Club and centred at SP 67002 33630, the extensive camp comprises about 105 rectangular military buildings and structures of various sizes, accessed by a system of footpaths joined to a linear SSW-NNE aligned access road leading from the A421, now called Bernwood Jubilee way. Some of the camp buildings’ functions are uncertain, but others include at least 28 other ranks barrack huts, a quiet room, handicrafts centre, games hut, ablutions blocks, latrine blocks, meat and bread storehouse, large cookhouse, two other ranks dining halls, quartermasters stores, HQ office, military intelligence room/hut, other ranks bath house, drying room, officers mess and kitchen, officers bath house, sergeants mess and ablutions block, company stores, fire squad hut, cinema and NAAFI, NAAFI staff quarters, vehicle repair section in a Romney hut, garage in a Romney hut, regimental offices and guardroom. There is also a water tower and a fuel compound/store. The camp is located on both the west and east side of the camp’s main road. Given the function of some buildings, the site is clearly run by the army and therefore likely to be a training camp. Centred some 240 metres SW of the camp, to the south of the A421, is a sewage works with a 75 metres long raised pipeline leading towards the camp. Following the war’s end, the camp remains completely intact until between 1951 and 1961, when almost all of the buildings are demolished, though the concrete building platforms remain visible. The remaining few buildings except for one are demolished by 1973, the final original building being demolished by 1993, though many of the buildings’ platform bases remain extant, along with the road system. On aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data, many of the concrete building bases are still visible under newly planted woodland of the extended golf course. The sewage works remain extant (4-13).
