Description

AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS SHOW EARTHWORKS OF CLOSES, HOUSE PLATFORMS AND LATER FIELD BOUNDARIES (B1).

Medieval village shrinkage is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as fragmentary and scattered earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field south of Portway Road and centred at SP 66462 26187, a number of fragmentary parallel linear ditches are aligned WNW-ESE, the same alignment as the adjacent ridge and furrow cultivation blocks. The function of these is uncertain but are likely to be boundaries. Within these parallel ditches are two probable ponds, one subrectangular and centred at SP 66396 26134 and being 47 metres SSW-NNE and 24 metres WNW-ESE. Some 124 metres to the E is an ‘axehead’ shaped ditch or pond about 26 x 16 metres at its widest (2-3).
