Monument record 0674000000 - Land at former St Mary's C of E School, Friarage Road, Aylesbury

2 large post-medieval pits or possibly ditches recorded in trench 7 during evaluation carried out by HAT in February 2001. One of features dated by pottery finds to 17th or 18th century, the other to mid 18th or 19th century. Following probable clearance and levelling of medieval settlement and possibly industrial remains in the 15th century (see CAS 6738), it is suggested that the site possibly reverted to agricultural use, which would seem to be supported by the sparce evidence for post-medieval activity recorded during the evaluation (B2). Bryant's map of 1824 shows a trackway (Mill Lane) leading from Oxford (now Friarage) Road, but no buildings are shown on the site. It would seem likely that the site remained undeveloped until the building of the school and schoolhouse in the mid-19th century. 25-inch OS maps of 1881, 1889 and 1925 show the western part of the site as plots of undeveloped land (B1).
