Description
Evidence of medieval (12th to 15th century) occupation recorded in trenches 3-5 and 7-9, during evaluation carried out by HAT in February 2001. Features include a large pit or ditch, a gully and a ditch all probably of 13th century date; a pit, 2 gullies, 4 ditches and a large pit, possibly a clay quarry pit, all probably of 14th century date; a gully and 3 intercutting ditches are probably of 15th century date. Medieval activity seems to have been concentrated along the current Mill Lane and Friarage Road frontages and the finds recovered seem to indicate domestic occupation of the 12th to 15th centuries. 3 parallel ditches aligned along the Friarage Road frontage were interpreted as 14th century property boundaries or possibly trackway ditches. Many of the medieval features appeared to have been truncated and were sealed by a thick levelling deposit in the 15th century, possibly suggesting a decline of occupation in the area and with the lack of much post-medieval activity, perhaps indicating that the site was subsequently given over to agricultural use (B2). NGR to centre of site.
Negative watching brief (B3).
