Description
Extensive medieval activity predating the construction of the King's Head complex was identified during excavations and watching briefs carried out in summer 1994 by BCMAS. 12 cess pits of at least 2 phases (12th-13th century and 13th -14th century); 2 other pits; a stone-lined well; postholes and stakeholes associated with 2 of the cess pits possibly represent privy structures; a stone wall may have been a later medieval property boundary, but does not correspond with any of the original tenement boundaries suggested by the National Trust's 1993 building survey. Further stone walls may also predate the King's Head buildings. Ceramic and limestone roof tiles recovered possibly derive from medieval buildings. The area probably lay within the back of plots belonging to medieval buildings on the Market Square or George Street (Hogg Lane) frontage (B1). NGR to centre of courtyard.
