Description

Roman coins found by detectorists around SP72753120 (unspecified type or number). Subsequent field walking by Michael Oates recovered a concentration of Roman finds within an area of 100m x 50m. Two roughly dressed local limestone quoin stones, roofing tiles, pottery, and a fragment of quern stone recovered. Additional quern stone and masonry fragments subsequently found, along with a cluster of quartz crystals which may have been 'collected' (B1). NGR to apporoximate centre of finds concentration.
Fifteen 3rd-4th century coins were found by Dave Shelley whilst metal-detecting and reported to BCM in April 1996 (B2).

This area was assessed as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). However, the features described (above) could not be identified on any aerial photographs due to the condition of crop growth visible on aerial photographs and probably the soil type, which is likely to be clayey because underlying geology is mudstone overlain by Superficial Deposits of Till Diamicton. Cropmarks of two ring ditches and part of a subrectangular enclosure are visible within a 300m radius of the site (see MBC45220, MBC45221 and MBC45222); they are sited on an area of higher, level ground.
