Description
Aylesbury-Steppingley pipeline site 13. Late Neolithic to early Bronze Age ditch. Mid to late Iron age ditch and late Neolithic to early Bronze Age flint scatter. Also two undated ditches but possibly associated with prehistoric pottery (B1). Awaiting final report.
32 Late Bronze Age flints were recovered during surface stripping. Of these, there is only one core and one primary flake, suggesting that the bulk of the material is probably derived from settlement activities. Two of the three ditches, 753 and 755, were at the southern end of the site - over 100m from other features. A significant amount of Neolithic or Bronze Age and mid-late Iron Age pottery was recovered from ditch 753, along with flint flakes and animal bone. At least some of this pottery was residual. Ditch 755 cut ditch 753 and was probably a recut. It contained late Iron Age pottery. Overall, the evidence seems to indicate that the ditch was originally cut in the mid- to late Iron Age, silted up with the incorporation of earlier material and was re-cut in the Late Iron Age. The ditches were small and not for boundaries, but may have been for water management. Two other ditches were probably later and were sealed by naturally accumulated material B2).
