Description

Bus shelter built for President Benes of Czechoslovakia in 1944-45. He spent the war at Aston Abbots manor House ('The Abbey') and was distressed by seeing people waiting in the rain for a bus (B1).
The bus shelter was built with £150 donated by President Benes in September 1943 and officially opened in April 1944. A commemorative plaque recording the donation was put up in 1992 (B2).
Thanksgiving memorial gifted by President Benes of Czechoslovakia to thank the people of Aston Abbot and Windgrave. The president and his cabinet were in exile here during WW2. Shelter constructed of brick with tiled roof, central door with windows either side. Dedicatory stone tablet placed inside the shelter. See also book, Lucas, John, Curiosities in Buckinghamshire.
