Description

A large complex of linears, pits and enclosures suggested by anomalies identified by geophysical survey in Areas 6-8. Probably a settlement, although date unknown (B1).
Subsequent trial trenching by Oxford Archaeology in March and April 2002 identified undated enclosure ditches and gullies interpreted as field boundaries and a possible trackway on the periphery of the probable settlement. See report for detail (B2).
Suggested location of Medieval hamlet of Little Marston, mentioned in late 14th and early 15th manorial accounts and manorial court records (B3).

A probable medieval windmill mound is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 610 metres NNW of Berryfields House and centred at SP 79057 16858, a circular mound is about 20 metres in diameter, surrounded by which is a circular ditch about 2.5 metres wide. It is possible that the mound represents a prehistoric funerary monument. Whilst there does not appear to be ridge and furrow cultivation nearby, the area in which it is located has been identified through geophysics as a probable medieval deserted settlement (0661300000 / MBC22170). On aerial photographs taken in 2023 and recent remote sensing data, the earthworks remain extant (4-6).
