Description

Western corner of field 3 from fieldwalking - largely negative reults (B1).
Magnetometer survey (area 18) showing linear and pit-like anomalies and 2 ring ditches (B2).
Subsequent trial trenching carried out by Oxford Archaeology in March and April 2002 identified the site as a small setllement with roundhouses, pits, postholes, a possible fence line, and small sub-rectangular fields. Pottery recovered dated from the Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age through to the Late Iron Age, with the bulk of the pottery dating to the Middle Iron Age. Animal bones recovered include cattle and sheep with smaller numbers of pig and horse bones and a single red deer bone. Charred plant remains included grains of wheat, oats and barley and weed seeds.
