Description

Berryfields fieldwalking, artefact scatter located on eastern side of Field 3 (B1).
Area roughly coincides with geophysics area 16, linear and pit-like anomalies indicative of Roman roaside 'ladder' settlement along the NW side of a probable NE-SW aligned road or trackway (B2).
D Levy recalls seeing bulldozing of earthworks in this area in 1943 (B3). Nothing visible on 1946 or subsequent APs.
Trial trenching carried out by Oxford Archaeology in March and April 2002 identified beam slots or footings for timber-framed buildings, pits and gullies, with pottery dating from the 1st to 4th centuries AD. The trackway seems to have been largely destroyed by medieval and post-medieval ploughing although shallow traces of the flanking ditches remain. Occupation of the settlement may have peaked in the 2nd century. See report for detail (B4).
