Description

Cropmark of ?ploughed-out windmill mound, to north of intersection of A413 (Akeley Road) and Bycell Road, Maids Moreton (B1-3).
Field referred to as 'Windmill Hill & Common' in Maids Moreton field name survey (B4).
Cropmark plot from Northants CC (B5).

The site of a windmill of probable medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs as extant cropmarks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 65m west of Towcester Road, north of Maid’s Moreton, and centred at SP 70214 36089. Cropmarks of a windmill base, a circular ditch with a central cross, approximately 20m in diameter, are visible on aerial photographs. These are situated in a field called Windmill Hill, on a 1591 map of Maid’s Moreton, close to the boundary which is still present on the 1940s aerial photographs but is no longer present. No windmill is shown on the 1591 map. (6-9)

The cropmark of a Medieval or Post Medeival windmill mound can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 2005. This is situated to the west of the covered reservior, north of Maids Moreton (10).
