Description
1879 MAP SHOWS OUTLINE OF SMALL QUARRY(?)(B7).
ON LEFT OF EYTHROPE ROAD A GROUP OF SHEDS & RUSTY SAND GRADING MACHINERY STAND RATHER DERELICT BUT IN USE. GRUFFY GROUND & PONDS MARK OLD QUARRIES (B8).
MUCH BUILDING RUBBLE TIPPED TO INFILL DISUSED WORKINGS, NOW LEVELLED. PRODUCED BUILDING SAND (B9) PROCEEDINGS OF THE GEOLOGISTS ASSOCIATION (DAVIES, 1899, VOL 16, 24) (B10).
A post medieval sand pit is visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field adjacent Botts Furlong Farm and centred at SP 77939 12608, an irregularly shaped extraction pit is about 29,519 square metres in area. The pit is still visible on aerial photographs taken in 1971, but by 1978 is in the process of being infilled and the land levelled. On aerial photographs taken in 2023, the land is now a pasture field and new housing has been constructed in the NE corner (11-14).
