Description

The first edition 6" OS map shows a landscaped style garden to the south east of the house. Recent AP's show a maze which was probably added in the 20th century. All garden features appear to have survived to some extent (B1).
Further details of gardens and associated estate (B2).
A happy balance is struck in the [20th century] building’s relationship with its wider designed landscape. The latter, by the noted landscape architect Georgina Livingston (who later worked with Cullinan at the Cambridge Centre for Mathematical Sciences), adapts the established features of the C19 grounds - the walled garden, the drive, the surrounding belt of trees - and adds swelling contours, careful planting and an elaborate network of intertwining pathways whose intricacy is prefigured in the hedge maze that marks the formal entrance to the site. The courtyard gardens, meanwhile, heighten the cloistered atmosphere while bringing the landscape right into the heart of the building. All this creates an impression of a world apart – an appropriate backdrop to the time-out-of-time atmosphere of the conference or ‘away weekend’ – while setting off the formality of the built elements to striking effect. The landscape setting is cited as one of the reasons for the decision to designate the building (B4).
