Description

The first edition 6-inch OS map shows the manor and to the south, parkland. Also formal gardens and ornamental pond. 1:10000 map shows parkland to be almost gone, probably taken over by playing fields for school. Area of gardens still appears intact. AP's show that the site is relatively undamaged, formal gardens appear still present (B9).
Watching brief carried out by Babtie in April and May 1999 during stripping for new access roads recorded a land drain and buried gravel path (shown on the second edition OS map of 1899). Other 18th to 20th century garden features were recorded in the walled garden (See CAS 1528:01:002)(B8).
The remains of a typical garden, pleasure ground and small park for a Chiltern manor house rebuilt in the 1870s to a design by George Devey with associated gardens. The key surviving ornamental period is the late C19, including mature trees, a walled kitchen garden and modest parkland. Some features such as the C18 walled kitchen garden and stable block may have been incorporated from the former vicarage that stood adjacent until demolished in the mid‐C19. The ensemble survives partly intact, although with the loss of some features particularly the garden features around the house since the site became a school in the mid‐C20. (See report for detail)(B15).
