Description

ROMAN CINERARY URN FOUND IN CLAY AT DEPTH OF 6FT. CONTAINED CALCINED HUMAN BONES IN 1909? (B2). LATE CELTIC URN WITH BURNT BONES (= SAME?)(B9).
ROMAN MATERIAL (ACC.1936.153): TOTAL SUGGESTS POSSIBLE BURIAL GROUP (B7).
NOTED AS A LA TENE III CREMATION BURIAL (B10).
IA-RB ditches identified during trial trench evalaution(B11).



Various finds have been made in Locke's brickfield at Hartwell (SP804125). A cinerary urn of an unknown period, and pottery fragments were purchased by the Bucks County Museum in 1909 (B12).
Acc No 85.09 (B13).
A saucer shaped pot of Samian ware, stamped Marcellus, was dug up and presented to the Museum by C W Wright in 1941 (B14).
A late Celtic urn with burnt bones has also been found (B13, B14).
"Unpublished material mainly of first and second century A.D. date (County Museum Accession nos. 1909.2 and 1936.153 plus other accession register entries) ...brick pit, now completely filled, (Hartwell Pit), site of at least one Romano Brititsh cremation burial, and probably of a settlement. Some pottery Belgic in character." (B15).
