Description

EVALUATION OF AYLESBURY-STEPPINGLEY PIPELINE FOUND A FAIR SPRINKLING OF RB PITS, CURRENTLY BEING SCRAPED BACK 11 APRIL. SPARSE RB MATERIAL. ?SURVIVING ONLY AS FILL IN FURROWS OF RIDGE AND FURROW. ENCLOSURE DITCH. (B1)
The site consisted of 12 ditches and gullies, 8 pits and a possible group of intercutting pits. There were three phases of activity: early Roman; mid to late Roman; and medieval or post-medieval. There were also a number of prehistoric flint flakes found on the surface. The early Roman period was represented only by a few sherds of pottery. In the later Roman period, a number of ditches on the site formed a rectilinear pattern. The recut of one of these ditches contained 2nd to 4th century pottery, in contrast to the late 1st to 2nd century material from the rest of this field system. A large quantity of later Roman material suggests a nearby settlement, possibly of low status given the low numbers of non-local and imported pottery sherds. There was evidence of metal-working on site. Medieval to post-medieval ridge-and-furrow crossed the site and pottery of this date was probably from fertilising activity (B2).
