Description
EVALUATION OF THE AYLESBURY-STEPPINGLEY PIPELINE FOUND 2 ROMAN DITCHES, CREST OF LOW HILL. COLOUR COAT SHERD FOUND. (B3)
Evidence from ditches and pits suggest that this was an area of agricultural activity on the periphery of a Roman domestic occupation site. The site was approx. 300m north-west of Lower Farm, Quainton. The A41 that follows the line of Roman Akeman Street, is less than 1km to the south. 3 ditches were found, all filled with relatively large quantities of Roman pottery sherds. A possible pit contained dumped material including burnt clay and charcoal. The quantity of finds suggest the site was very close to an area of settlement. The ditches presumably delimited plot boundaries within this settlement. They would have drained this low-lying area. Two of them ran in an east-west direction. The pottery ranges from the late 1st to mid-3rd or possibly 4th centuries AD (B4).
