Description

SOME UNDATED DITCHES TO THE NE OF SEWAGE WORKS. FOUND DURING EVALUATION OF AYLESBURY-STEPPINGLEY PIPELINE. (B1)
8 substantial ditches were uncovered. They were mostly spread about 10m apart and were orientated almost exactly north-south. They were probably dug to drain the waterlogged ground and probably all part of the same drainage system, but were also all recut so may represent phases of maintenance and renewal. No artefacts were found in the ditches, which sugegsts they were far from settlement and earlier than medieval, when it was common practice to use midden material containing domestic debris for fertilising fields. It is very similar to CAS 6294, suggesting it could be Roman (B2).
