Description

Plan Form - CIRCULAR
CIRCULAR CROPMARK WHICH IS IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO CASS 01099 (CIRCULAR PLATFORM & HOARD). SITUATED EAST SIDE OF CUBLINGTON AIRFIELD (B1).

A circular ditched enclosure of probable Roman date is visible on historic aerial photographs as cropmarks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field that was formerly part of RAF Wing wartime airfield and centred at SP 86179 23490, a circular ditch up to 3.3 metres wides encloses an area about 58.5 metres in diameter. Within the circular ditch along the N facing side are fragmentary arcs of ditch that suggest the feature was possibly a double-ditched enclosure. Gaps on the W and E sides of the enclosure by the project mapping is the result of lines in the crop on the relevant aerial photography formed by agricultural machinery obscuring the cropmarks. Within the enclosure on the W side is an irregularly shaped macula. Similarly, 4 smaller irregularly shaped pits are located NNW and NE from the N side of the enclosure ditch. Three sections of ditch extend from the E side of the enclosure, though the association with the enclosure is unclear. In the immediate area of the enclosure have been discovered a cluster of coins ranging from 1st to 3rd century Roman, 4th and 5th Saxon through to 15th century medieval. It has been suggested that this is a Saxon to Medieval moot or meeting place (MBC3311/ 0109900000). Given the date range from coin finds on the site, a terminus post quem suggests that the feature is Romano-British in origin. On aerial photographs taken in 2022 there is no evidence of the features mapped (2-3).
