Description

Plan Form - SUBRECTANGULAR
SUBRECTANGULAR ENCLOSURE SHOWING UP AS A CROPMARK. SITUATED TO THE EAST OF THORNTON. (B1).

Subcircular enclosures with linear features and maculae of uncertain date are visible on historic aerial photographs as cropmarks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located at approximately 200m north east of Thornton Lodge Farm, Thornton, and centred at SP 75715 36057. Large subcircular enclosure is 41m in diameter with an 8m diameter enclosure inside and further cropmarks which might form a further subcircular enclosure to the south, or a possible banjo enclosure. Two linear features are also visible but these may be associate with natural features. British Geological 1:50,000 mapping shows two linear deposits of Superficial Deposits of Head, further to the north which corresponds with low ground on lidar visualisations. Similar enclosures are recorded to the north east (see MBC44751) at a similar height above the river. (2-3)
