Description

METAL DETECTOR ACTIVITY DURING TOPSOIL STRIPPING ON WENDOVER BY-PASS BELIEVED TO PRODUCE MUCH ROMAN MATERIAL (UNREPORTED). AREA OF DARK SOIL, UNMORTARED FLINT SPREAD, & FINDS OF CERAMIC AND TILE NOTED BY M FARLEY & J PARKHOUSE DURING SITE VISIT. PROBABLY RURAL SETTLEMENT SITE AS NO SUBSTANTIAL STRUCTURES. Roman material includes coins and brooches (B1).
ROMANO-BRITISH POTTERY & TEGULAE FOUND BY TOM CLARKE WHILST METAL DETECTING ON LINE OF WENDOVER BY-PASS. 1 SAMIAN SHERD, 1 SAMIAN DRAG 18/31, 4 TEGULAE, 4 POSSIBLE TEGULAE, 1 OOLITIC LIMESTONE, 4 illegible Roman coins (one Valentinian) (B2).
Local detectorist reports more finds and suggest that site may extend south of Nash Lee Road. Finds include a disc brooch, an iron knife and 3 lead weights (B3).
Finds of fifteent 3rd-4th century Roman coins and Roman pottery reported at SP 8569 0903 suggests that the site may extend further to the east. The finds were made roughly 10 yards from the road and 10 yards from a slightly raised area (B4).
