Description

SMALL STRAP END. DESIGN WORN, BUT DISCERNIBLE. OUTLINE OF 2 RIVET-HOLES ON BUTT, WHICH IS SPLIT TO TAKE LEATHER STRAP. RELIEF ORNAMENT CONTAINED IN DIVISIONS MARKED BY RECESSES. ANIMAL-HEAD TERMINAL SHOWS DEEPLY MARKED EYES & LONG EARS. CENTRAL PANEL WITH CROSS FOUND ON TRACK SURFACE (B1-4).

A small bronze Anglo-Saxon strap-end found by Head, on the surface of the S side of Coney Lane, near The Warren, Bledlow. 120 yds above is a chalk pit where Saxon burials have been discovered. (Chalk-pit at SP 7768 0144 see SP 70 SE 12 : strap-end therefore found c SP 7768 0156. The design is much worn and corroded, but sufficient detail, with emphasis on the centre panels promient cross, remains to suggest a late 9th c date (B1).
