Description
Grade II. 1st half of C18, perhaps formerly one house. Plum coloured brickwork with red brick dressings. 2 storeys and attics, moulded plinth, moulded stringcourse at 1st floor level, modillion and moulded roof cornice. Brick pilasters at corners, hipped old tiled roof. 8 bay front, segmentally headed flush sash windows with glazing bars. 2 doors each with 6 panels, 1 in 2nd bay from left hand has fielded panels and architrave surround with panelled pilasters under boldly carved scroll brackets supporting cornice and segmental pediment, pulvinated frieze between brackets. The 2nd door, in 4th bay from right hand, has architrave surround under cut brackets and delicate dentil cornice hood. 3 pedimented sliding casement dormers, central pediment segmental. Irregular back north west wing of flint rubble and red bricks with elaborately bracketed dentil cornice. Late C17 or early C18. Interior? Nos 43 to 47 (odd) form a group (B1).
Wall paintings in a first floor room at the front of the house, originally found and recorded in 1911, were re-exposed during internal building works in February 1975 and recorded by Clive Rouse. Probably originally nine panels each with a female figure standing within an architectural setting of a round headed arch or niche between columns with cornice and decorative dado panel, and possibly representing the four virtues and five senses, but mostly too damaged to be clearly identifiable. See article for detail (B3).
