The Antelope is first mentioned around 1480, when it was formed from the merger of the Saracen's Head (first mentioned in 1312) and the New Inn (B4).

The college was set up in 1799 by Lieutenant-Colonel (later General) Gaspard le Marchant to train senior army officers. Le Marchant was the academy's Lieutenant Governor, with General Jarry as the Commandant. Jarry left in 1806 and was replaced by Major Howard Douglas. The junior branch was based at 'Remnantz' in Marlow [CAS 13050], before moving to Sandhurst (B4).
