Description

GRADE II+. LATE C19 FORMAL GARDEN DESIGNED BY LUTYENS IN 1893 FOR DUCHESS OF BEDFORD. GERTRUDE JEKYLL THOUGHT TO HAVE COLLABORATED WITH PLANTING ADVICE. A PERGOLA, ROCK & WATER GARDEN IN CONTRASTING NATURAL STYLE, FURTHER DEVELOPED IN 1911. ALSO A 'RIVER' GARDEN WITH CLIPPED HEDGES [MORE](B1).
Short illustrated article on design of the garden, including a plan (B3).
The first garden of the formal partnership [of Lutyens and Jekyll], although no planting plans apparently survive. Woodside is a sculptured garden, very much in the Italian style. The purpose of the axial design was to unite house, garden, river and the extra land on the farther bank. This was done by leading from the new west door of the house to the terrace at the top of the slope, from where a stepped path, with bordering yew-enclosed flower beds, led down to the pond court. The pond court, with set-in seats and flower beds round an arbour (which originally sheltered a round pond), introduces a choice between the the river garden, with wide herbaceous borders and a seat at the farther end, or crossing the bridge to the formal rose garden and the mill lawn. The water garden was planted with irises, marsh marrigolds, arums, rushes and arrowheads. [Sketch plan, photos, summary of importance](B4).
