Description

Grade II. House, barn and wall, the barn formerly a stone-masons' workshop for Eric Gill's assistants. The Cottage has 3 mid C18 bays with early C19 bay to left, altered C20. W. front is of chequer brick with vitreous headers and narrow first floor band course; rear mostly rebuilt in brick C20. Old tiled roof, brick chimneys to gables, C20 brick chimney to centre front. One storey and attic, 4 bays. Centre bays have C20 paired leaded casements, those to attic in gabled eaves-line dormers. Doors in end bays. C19 brick projection to front of right bay with board door, paired wooden casement and weatherboard shed attached to front. Buttress to right side has carved stone panel. Some irregular framing inside. Barn to left is early C19. Timber frame and weatherboard, brick plinth, tiled roof. 3 bays. Central gabled projection with board door and 2-light barred wooden window. Flanking bays have C20 lean-to shacks with corrugated asbestos roofs. Curved principal trusses with irregular braces to tie-beams. Attached to left end is a short length of brick wall with inset stone inscription tablet. Pigott's was the home of Eric Gill, stone carver and engraver, 1928-40 (B1).
