Description

Grade II. House, at one time used as workhouse. Dated 1761, altered late C19-early C20. Red and vitreous brick, hipped old tile roof, brick chimneys. Double pile. 2 storeys and attic, 3 bays. Flint and brick plinth with moulded coping, first floor band course with modillions, moulded brick eaves. C19-C20 3-light mullion and transom windows in enlarged openings, those to ground floor with flat brick arches. Central flush panelled door with C19-C20 semi-circular fanlight and pedimented brick surround. Band course is broken upwards over pediment. Other sides are similar but more irregular, with small central closet windows, some blocked. Right side has C19-C20 canted bay window; left side has band course pitched up into triangle to centre, and C20 flat-roofed extension. Interior: good original fireplace with shouldered and stepped architrave, and pulvinated frieze in rear right room; shallow niches with semi-circular arched heads and shaped imposts above other fireplaces, the front right room having 2 larger niches containing ovals with raised heart motifs; staircase with roll- moulded handrail; painted initials MWI in front right room (B1).
