Description
Grade II+. House. Circa 1700-1710 with later C18 alterations. Probably built for Groner Steyn, owner of Clapton Mill [CASS 02883]. Chequer brick with vitreous headers, the E. front and one bay of N. front with tuck pointing and gauged brick band. Coved plaster eaves, hipped old tile roof, brick chimneys. 2 storeys with lower ground floor and attic, 3 X 4 bay fenestration. First floor band course. Main S. front has 3 bays of 4-pane sashes with chequered segmental heads and panelled blind boxes . Central ground floor opening altered to French doors. 2 hipped dormers with paired wooden casements. Lower ground floor has projecting extension, possibly C19 but refurbished C20, of brick with wooden Ionic half columns, moulded cornice, wooden balustrade, and sashes flanking French doors. E. front is of 4 bays, the 2 left bays blind with painted sashes to first floor. Right bays have 3-pane sashes. Panelled door in third bay has rectangular fanlight and C20 wooden porch with large hood on Ionic columns. 2 hipped dormers. N. front has 3 bays of C20 3-pane sashes, the upper windows with gauged heads, and 2 dormers. W. front altered and irregular with large C20 dormer. Interior: C18 panelling in S. rooms and first floor N. room; corner fireplaces with wooden bolection mouldings in S. rooms; S. bedroom has closet with re-used C17 panelling; central staircase with early C18 twisted balusters to upper flights (B1).
