Description
Grade II. Public house. Late C18-early C19, with C16 gabled cross wing to right, and altered C17 wing attached to left to rear of No. 40. C20 extensions to rear. Main block is of whitewashed brick with dentil eaves, hipped old tile roof and brick chimneys. 2 storeys and attic, 7 bays. First floor has 5 4-pane sashes with cambered heads, and blind window panels with inn signs to bays 3 and 6. Ground floor has 2 canted bay windows with sashes, and tripartite sash to right, all under flat asphalted hood on slender iron shafts. Half-glazed C20 door between left windows with rectangular fanlight and panelled pilasters; C20 board door with similar doorcase between right bays; C20 door inserted to left. 2 gabled dormers with C20 paired wooden casements. Some timber studding in rear wall. Cl6 wing to right has whitewashed brick ground floor, whitewashed rendered upper storey and roughcast over timber framing to right side. Plain tile roof, C19-C20 bargeboards. 2 storeys, lower than main block, with gable end to green. Wooden casements with single horizontal glazing bars, 3-light to ground floor, 4-light above. C20 board door to right. C17 rear wing to left is timber framed with brick infill, rebuilt C20, formerly a forge. Interior: right wing has heavy floor joists (B1).
1st edition 25-inch OS map appears to show No 40 [CASS 12890:09] as the Smithy.
