Description

Grade II. Public house and cottage. Probably C17, altered. Whitewashed roughcast to front, whitewashed chalk block and brick dressings to left gable end and rear, slight timbering in left gable. Half-hipped plain tile roof. Chimney with attached shafts of thin brick between left bays, later brick chimney to front right. One storey and attic, 3 bays. Various wooden casements, 2-light in gabled dormers, ground floor windows with flush-panelled shutters. C20 door with glazed and barred surround and lean-to hood on brackets between right bays; C20 chalk lobby at left end. 2-bay former outbuilding, now bar, to right, with 2 C20 wooden casements, door and skylight. Brick cottage wing to rear of one storey and an attic, with wooden casements and small gable behind lateral chimney. RCHM I p. 256 Mon.6 (B1).
Use of chalk blocks in the construction observed when rendering on the eastern half removed (B2)
