Description

Grade II. Offices and house, part formerly shop. C16, of 2 builds, altered and extended to left and rear C19 and C20. Colourwashed render and roughcast, the centre bay with exposed timber frame and colourwashed brick infill. Old tile roofs. Small C20 whitewashed brick chimney to front between builds, replacing large external stack. Another chimney removed from between left bays. Taller 3-bay block to left with part of left bay eaves-breaking and gabled; 2 lower bays to right. 2 storeys. Taller block has large C20 casement to ground floor of left bay, horizontal sliding sash above, and C20 barred wooden casements to remainder. C20 board door with small gabled hood between right bays. Lower block has projecting C20 shop windows flanking door, and C20 3-light window to first floor left. At left end is a mid C19 extension of colourwashed brick in rat-trap bond, with slate roof. This has 2 storeys and 2 bays with 4-pane sashes to first floor, large C20 ground floor window and C20 door to right. Various Cl9 and C20 extensions to rear, one dated EA 1870 on brick. Interior: timber framing survives in upper storey, except in left bay, with curved braces to tie-beams and curved wind-braces, those in taller block more steeply arched. Taller block has very heavy longitudinal joists in right bay, inserted floor to centre, and left bay altered. Lower block has heavy transverse joists without spines, and stop-chamfering to tie-beam and brace. RCHM I p. 91 Mon. 3 (B1).
