Description

Grade II. House, now 2 shops. Probably early C16; C17, C18, C19 and C20 alterations. Timber frame with plastered wattle and daub infill; right-hand property with painted C19 Flemish bond brickwork. Plain tile roofs, brick stack. 2 storeys, 2 bays, the left-hand bay jettied; the right-hand bay refronted in C19, but with evidence that the right-hand half of this bay was recessed originally. Left bay has mid-late C20 shop front with door to Lychgate Cottage on left; on 1st floor framing exposed, including ends of joists, bressumer and arched tension braces; C20 2 light 4-pane window. Right-hand bay has mid-late C20 shop front in earlier surround with deep facia; 4-pane sash to 1st floor, below gable. Rear: right bay has framing exposed on 1st floor, with C20 door and windows. Truncated C18 chimney rises from rear roof pitch, between bays. C19 and C20 additions to right-hand bay, not of special interest. Left bay has C19 rear wing addition with three side-sliding small-pane sashes, and logged eaves. Interior: on ground floor, left bay has chamferred cross-beam, and right bay a large-scantling cross-beam near front of property, chamfered at left side (with a run-out and a stepped-cyma stop) and with slots and mortices in soffit at centre of right side indicating position of former wall. On 1st floor old joists and wide floor boards. In right bay the chimney has C17 brickwork to lower section, C18 brickwork above. Central roof truss has camfered tie-beam supporting queen posts braced to collar, the braces and posts hollow- moulded and forming 4- centeredd arch; ½ pyramidal stops to moulding. Butt purlins. Old, pegged, rafters, with carpenters marks (B1).
