Description
Reference of 1847 relates that Addingrove was a hamlet near SE angle of Oakley parish (B1).
A survey in 1953 found no obvious traces, though there were signs of strip cultivation NW of farm (B4).
For alternative locations see CASS 01555 & 01966 (B7).
NGR to Addingrove Farm (B6).
'Hugh holds Addingrove from Walter. It answers for 3 1/2 hides. Land for 4 ploughs; in lordship 2. 2 villagers with 7 small holders have 3 ploughs. 1 slave; meadow for 1 plough. In total, value 60s; when acquired 40s; before 1066 £4. Wulfward, Queen Edith's man, held this manor; he could sell' (B9).
Deserted medieval village at Addingrove SP 665113. Poor visual features. Period of desertion circa 1350-1450 (B5, B10, B11 and B12).
Excepting a well defined moat, SP 61 SE 9, there are only slight and amorphous remains indicative of desertion, in the pasture fields NE of the road. They are situated on the gentle NW slopes of a valley and are bounded by rig and furrow. The site is crossed by a deep winding hollow, perhaps a former course of the stream to the SE, which was possibly diverted to feed the moat. A very shallow, unsurveyable, hollow way may be traced for about 200.0m running NW-SE across the site (B13).
