Description

Grade II. Early C18 painted brick front with parapet, said to be circa 1715. 3 storeys, 2 flush sash windows with glazing bars, ground floor shutters. 6 fielded panelled door with cut bracketed hood. C17 and earlier main structure with gabled back wings partly modernised and extended. Interior contains C16 and C17 fireplace and early wall paintings, C17 and circa l715. Records of Bucks, XIII, 45-7. Nos 14A, 16 & 18 form a group (B1).
18th century wall-paintings survive in a small third-floor bedroom. One wall is decorated with a large figure probably of King George I, surrounded by floral devices, with a looped up curtain above and a hunting scene to the left. The costume suggests a date of about 1715. The other painting is of large stylised floral forms with exotic birds and two small figures of gentlemen, one smoking a pipe, the other possibly taking snuff (B2).
Also known as the George Inn and The George Hotel. Became a licensed coaching inn in 1622. In the 1790s, the stage-coach would set out from the George Inn for the Bell and Crown in Holborn, a journey which took 5 hours. The mail coach also left from here (B4).
