Description

POTTERY FOUND JULY-OCT 1973 ON SITE OF NEW HOUSING ESTATE. COULD BE PLOUGHWASH. INCLUDES 1 OUTSWEPT STORAGE JAR RIM, SOAPY FABRIC; BEAD RIMS; C1-EARLY C2 MORTARIA RIM. POSSIBLE INDICATION OF C1-2 SETTLEMENT. ALSO A FEW PIECES OF TILE, BURNT FLINT & HORSE TEETH. FOUND BY MR F J YOUNG (B1-3).

(SU 884 916) In July 1973 Young (B1) found a few pieces of Roman tile and about 30 Roman sherds, burnt flint and horse-teeth in a trench 2 1/2 feet deep on a new housing estate in a small dean (possibly ploughwash). Finds in Bucks County Museum (Acc no 242 73). (B4)

The precise findspot of the Roman material was indicated by Mr F J Young at SU 8841 9165, at present under grass within a housing estate situated at the base of a dry combe. No finds were made during field investigation.

According to Young the finds came out of one pit about 1.0m square and at a depth of about 0.6m; and he believes that further finds are inevitable in the vicinity when a proposed estate road is built through the area of finds (B5).
