Description

Grade II. C17 refronted. Timber-framed; brick; hand made tile roof with central cement rendered chimney. Modillion cornice. Two storeys; 4 bays. All windows are 2-light casements with leaded lights and segmental relieving arches (B1).
Historic building recording and watching brief carried out by Albion Archaeology in March 2016 during internal works and groundworks for replacement rear extension suggest that the brick front is integral to the original building and that there was a single construction phase in the early 18th century. Originally two cottages, the building was converted into a single dwelling probably in the 1950s with considerable changes made to the internal layout and few datable features surviving. The timber frame includes much re-used timbers (purlins, ceiling joists, and transverse beam supporting the roof valley of the rear range) and construction marks were recorded on the roof trusses of the front range. The watching brief identified the brick foundations for two 19th century outbuildings to the rear of the house, one of which is probably shown on the 1843 Tithe map. Cultivation layers and two pits were also found with finds including small amounts of 17th-18th century pottery. See report for detail (B2).
