Description

Grade II+. Early C18. 2 storeys and attic. Colour-washed brick. String at 1st floor level. Heavy modillioned wood eaves cornice. Hipped old tile roof. Corner building with one end facing Temple Street, and side facing Temple Square. Temple Street front has 1 window on 1st floor, and on ground floor C18 shallow bow window to left hand with fluted surround, plain frieze and cornice and door to right hand in rich doorcase of fluted Corinthian pilasters with carved capitals supporting elaborately carved console brackets and flat moulded wood hood. The Temple Square front has 2 dormers 2 windows with moulded frames and 1 later door. Moulded ceiling beams to interior possibly C16. Externally this building is a good example of an early C18 small town house. All the listed buildings on the south-west side of Temple Street form a group (B1).
No 28 Temple Street, on the corner of Temple Square has an extremely handsome doorcase (fluted pilasters with richly carved capitals and brackets) linked to a bowed shopfront. Behind this the house is a good C16 timber-framed one, with moulded floor beams and a dragon beam at the corner - it was originally jettied on both faces (B2).
Part of No 28 was incorporated into the adjoining property at 2 Temple Square between 1830 and 1833 (B3).
