Description

Grade II. C17-18. Two storeys and attic. No 19 has projecting plinth. Rubbed brick string at first floor level and with vitreous brick walls and red brick dressings. Old tile roof. Sash window early C19, on first floor, and modern 1. Two similar windows on ground floor and six-panel door in doorcase of reeded pilasters and flat moulded hood. Secondary modern door. Roof altered to Mansard probably early C19. Box casement dormer. No 21 is of similar general design with 2 windows on first floor, - 1 triple light mullioned and transomed casement. One additional blocked window. On ground floor one modern window and modern door with fanlight. Some timber framework at back. These two houses form a pair of reasonably similar appearance. No 21 has a heavy modillion wood eaves cornice. Nos 19 to 25 (odd) form a group (B1).
Building recording carried out by AS&C in June 2006 following works to cellar of No.21, concluded that the cellar was cut when the house was first built and originally extended to the properties either side (linking Nos.19, 21 and 23 Castle Street). The east wall, dividing the cellars of Nos. 19 and 21 was constructed in the 19th or early 20th century, the west wall, dividing the cellars of Nos. 21 and 23 was built in two phases, the most recent being in the late 20th century when the floor was lowered. See report for detail (B2).
