Description

Grade II. House, now offices. Early-mid C18 and late C19, with C20 alterations. Flared headers in header bond with red brick detailing, plain-tile roof brick ridge and lateral stacks. L-plan. 2-storey, 3-window range. Blocked carriageway to right of centre now filled by shallow canted bay window. Doorway to left of centre with flat-arched, gauged brick head, red brick to jambs and plank door leading to passage. 16-pane sash window to left and similar sashes to 1st floor, all with gauged brick, flat-arched heads. That to 1st floor centre is a dummy window. Moulded cornice of fine rubbed and gauged brick and stone-coped brick parapet. Cross wing to right, rebuilt late C19, has 2-light casement windows to ground and 1st floors with chamfered stone surrounds, those to ground floor with transoms. 2-light attic casement in barge-boarded gables, plinth with chamfered stone coping and slate roof. Wing, probably early C19, to rear right of 2 storeys with hipped slate roof. INTERIOR: chamfered spine beam (B1).
The truss in L2, which is part of number 26 West Street, is a 19th /early 20th century king post truss that is a later addition to the building and utilises a stone set into a former window opening for bracing. The timbers are entirely machine cut and the truss functions on a very rudimentary level (B2).
