Description

Grade II. House. Dated 1720, probably with older origins and C20 alterations. Red brick in Flemish bond with flared headers, plain-tile roof and brick end stacks. 3-unit plan. 2 storeys and attic; 4-window range. 4-panel door to right of centre with overlight and straight hood on wrought-iron brackets, approached by one stone step. Blocked door to far left, 16-pane sash window to ground floor left of door, 12-pane sashes to ground floor left and right, with segmental-arched heads. 12-pane sashes to 1st floor. Wave-moulded brick plinth, storey band and wood modillion eaves. Pair of gable roof dormer windows. Central datestone below eaves sunk in square, wave-moulded brick recess inscribed R/RM/1720. Near datestone 2 Sun fire insurance plaques and another below, a Phoenix fire insurance plaque. Right side and rear elevations are rendered with incised masonry patterns. Back wall appears to be timber-framed and may pre-date front. Single-storey extension to rear with lean-to plain-tile roof and 2-storey wing to rear left. INTERIOR: chamfered spine beams and open fireplace with bressumer. Drawing room has painted eared wood chimneypiece with pulvinated frieze broken to centre to frame figure in relief of standing cherub bearing garland and cornucopia. Collar-truss roof (B1).
